Can you believe it? The Legend of Zelda is turning 40 today, and we’re just now discovering its secret sci-fi past! According to recent revelations from art director Satoru Takizawa, the Zelda series has been flirting with sci-fi concepts since its early days, including UFO abductions and time travel mechanics that would make Back to the Future blush. It turns out that some of the most iconic elements of Hyrule might have very different origins than we ever imagined.

Digging deeper into these alternate timelines, we learn that Breath of the Wild’s development team considered having UFOs invade from space and abduct cattle - yes, you read that right! Meanwhile, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto has mused about the Triforce’s magic actually originating from microchips and computer parts. Even dating back to 1992’s A Link to the Past, concept art was drafted for a cyberpunk Princess Zelda, complete with flying cars and futuristic aesthetics. These ideas were so compelling that they almost changed the very nature of what a Zelda game could be.

Thankfully, we got the incredible games we know and love instead, but it’s no coincidence that these sci-fi elements found their way into Hyrule’s lore. The Sheikah technology with its mechanical octopus arms, ominous glowing lights, and advanced metallurgy always felt otherworldly. Heck, Link’s Sheikah Slate in Breath of the Wild is basically a smartphone! It seems that ancient visitors may have left behind technology that shaped Hyrule’s history, giving us the perfect blend of fantasy and sci-fi that makes the series so unique. Who knows what other secrets might be buried in Nintendo’s archives?
