Owlcat Games, the studio behind the popular Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous RPGs, has confirmed they’re using generative AI during development of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The studio emphasized that while AI tools are being used in the development process, “everything in the final version will definitely 100% be human made.”

This admission comes as the game industry continues to grapple with how to incorporate AI technologies into development workflows. Owlcat’s approach appears to be using AI for assistance in areas like concept art, asset generation, or procedural content creation during early development phases, while maintaining human oversight for the final game.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn represents Owlcat’s first project based on an existing IP outside of the Pathfinder universe. The studio has built a reputation for creating complex, isometric RPGs with deep mechanics and challenging combat.

The use of AI tools in game development remains a controversial topic in the industry, with concerns about copyright infringement, job displacement, and maintaining creative quality. However, many studios are experimenting with AI to increase efficiency, particularly in asset creation and prototyping phases.
