Witch on the Holy Night Anime Film Cast Revealed: Haruka Tomatsu, Kana Hanazawa, Yūsuke Kobayashi Return

ufotable, the acclaimed animation studio behind Demon Slayer and the Fate series, has revealed the returning main cast for the upcoming Witch on the Holy Night (Mahōtsukai no Yoru) anime film. The announcement, made on May 16, confirms that the voice actors from the original visual novel will reprise their roles for the film adaptation.

The Cast

The three lead characters will be voiced by:

  • Haruka Tomatsu (Zero Two in Darling in the Franxx, Asuna in Sword Art Online) as Aoko Aozaki — a high school student and reluctant heir to a family line of modern mages
  • Kana Hanazawa (Akane in Oshi no Ko, Mayuri in Steins;Gate) as Alice Kuonji — a reclusive young witch living in a lonely manor atop a hill who becomes Aoko’s mentor
  • Yūsuke Kobayashi (Senku in Dr. Stone, Subaru in Re:Zero) as Soujyuro Sizuki — a mysterious transfer student unfamiliar with the modern world

This marks a significant milestone for the project, which was first announced for a film adaptation back in December 2021 and has been in development at ufotable ever since. The film is slated to open later in 2026.

The Story

Set in the late 1980s, Witch on the Holy Night follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a long family line of mages. Despite her lack of interest in magic, Aoko is suddenly declared the heir of her family’s magical art and reluctantly begins her apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, a young witch leading a solitary existence.

Balancing her duties as a student council president with learning the arcane arts, Aoko’s life becomes even more complicated when she meets Sōjūrō Shizuki, a transfer student who seems disconnected from the modern world. Meanwhile, her older sister Tōko Aozaki plots to reclaim what she believes is her birthright.

The story is particularly significant within the Type-Moon universe — often called the “Nasuverse” — as it provides one of the few tangible connections between its various works. An older Aoko Aozaki appears as an early mentor to Shiki Tohno in Tsukihime, while an older Tōko Aozaki employs Shiki Ryōgi in The Garden of Sinners.

The Source Material

Witch on the Holy Night has a storied history. What began as a novel draft by Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi in the mid-1990s — before they even founded Type-Moon — was eventually reworked into a full visual novel that launched in April 2012 in Japan. The game finally reached Western audiences on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in December 2022, followed by a Steam release in December 2023, where it sold over 150,000 copies worldwide on console alone.

The visual novel was brought to life with graphics by Hirokazu Koyama and was one of the first Type-Moon titles to showcase the studio’s now-trademark emphasis on cinematic visual presentation — making it a natural fit for ufotable’s signature filmmaking style.

J-Hub’s Take

The Witch on the Holy Night film has been one of the most anticipated Type-Moon adaptations since its announcement, and this cast reveal confirms that ufotable is keeping the original voice cast intact — a decision that fans of the visual novel will appreciate.

There’s a particular emotional weight to this project. Witch on the Holy Night was Nasu and Takeuchi’s first collaboration, predating even the original Tsukihime doujin game that launched Type-Moon into cult status. Bringing this foundational story to the big screen with ufotable’s production values — the same studio that defined the visual language of Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works and the Heaven’s Feel films — feels like a full-circle moment for Type-Moon.

For fans of the broader Nasuverse, this film is essential viewing. The connections between Witch on the Holy Night and other Type-Moon works make it a key piece of lore, but the story stands on its own as a coming-of-age tale about a girl thrust into a world of magic she never asked for. With the Tsukihime remake now available globally and the Fate franchise continuing to expand, 2026 is shaping up to be an excellent year for Type-Moon fans.

What’s Next

ufotable has yet to announce a precise release date beyond “later this year,” but with the cast revealed and pre-production presumably well underway, a trailer or teaser — and a release window — could arrive in the coming months.
